Rachel Sebelist is an abstract artist from Pennsylvania. Her paintings are process driven abstractions created from intuition. To begin a painting, she combines different source materials to form compositions, such as her drawings, prints and photographs. She then applies color, textures, and patterns to create a collage aesthetic. Subject matter will often emerge within the painting as she works, but this isn’t often highlighted because the shapes are purely vessels to hold the color, textures, and patterns. She is interested in the conversations that appear within the composition as a whole, as these decorative forms come together and interact with each other. She enjoys the created conflicts that arise when elements clash, and the challenge to create a cohesive image beyond the tension. Like a puzzle, each piece is a necessary element to complete the entire image.
Her paintings often become abstract representations of hope and inner peace, an important mental health reminder that is very close to her heart.
